What you will learn
How We Clean Every Item
We don't just 'wipe it down'. We scrub, disinfect, and seal it. Why? Because we're parents too, and we know that 'clean enough' isn't clean enough for a baby. We use industry-standard processes to ensure every nook and cranny is safe.
Sealed Delivery: You Verify
Every item arrives in a sealed bag. Our executive opens the seal in front of you. Inspect it thoroughly - fabric, frame, wheels. If you're not satisfied, reject it on the spot. Zero charge.
Car Seats: Zero-Accident Policy
We never rent a car seat that has been in an accident. After every return, we inspect the EPS foam and structure. We retire car seats 2 years before manufacturer expiry. Your baby's safety is non-negotiable.
Our 7-Step Sanitization Process (In Detail)
We keep saying 'we clean thoroughly' but let us actually tell you what that means. Here is the exact process every HomieHyra item goes through after it is returned and before it reaches your home. This is not marketing fluff. This is our actual warehouse protocol.
- Step 1 - Full Disassembly: Every removable part is taken off. Canopies, trays, harness straps, wheel covers, cup holders, mosquito nets. Everything comes apart.
- Step 2 - Visual Inspection: Our team checks for structural damage, cracks, loose screws, worn brakes, and any safety concerns. Items that fail this check are retired permanently. They do not get cleaned and re-rented. They are done.
- Step 3 - Fabric Washing: All removable fabric (seat covers, harness pads, canopy liners) goes into an industrial washing machine with baby-safe, fragrance-free detergent. We wash at 60 degrees Celsius to kill bacteria and dust mites.
- Step 4 - Frame and Hard Surface Cleaning: Frames, trays, and plastic components are scrubbed with a baby-safe disinfectant solution. Wheels are cleaned individually. Crevices are cleaned with brushes to remove trapped food, dirt, and grime.
- Step 5 - UV Sanitization: The assembled item goes under UV-C light treatment for 30 minutes. UV-C light destroys 99.9% of bacteria, viruses, and mold spores on surfaces. This is the same technology used in hospital sterilization.
- Step 6 - Air Drying and Quality Check: Items air-dry completely to prevent mold growth. A second quality check ensures everything is reassembled correctly, brakes work, harnesses click, and wheels roll smoothly.
- Step 7 - Sealed Packaging: The item is wrapped in a fresh poly bag and sealed with a tamper-evident sticker. This seal is only broken by you at the time of delivery. If the seal is broken when it arrives, reject it immediately.
Why New Baby Gear Is Not Necessarily Cleaner
Here is something that will surprise you. Brand new baby gear from Amazon or Flipkart is not as clean as you think. Those items sit in warehouses for months, handled by multiple workers, exposed to dust, and packed in factories where hygiene standards vary wildly. Have you ever opened a new product and found it covered in a thin layer of dust or smelling like chemicals? That is factory residue and warehouse storage.
A HomieHyra rental item, by contrast, has been through a rigorous cleaning process within the last 48 hours before it reaches you. It has been UV sanitized, fabric-washed, and sealed. In many cases, our cleaned rental is hygienically superior to a new item straight out of the box. We are not saying new items are dirty. We are saying cleaned items are cleaner. There is a difference.
Stroller Safety: What We Check Before Every Rental
Strollers are complex machines with moving parts that wear out over time. Before every rental, our team runs a specific safety checklist on every stroller unit.
- Brake Test: Both rear brakes must engage firmly and hold the stroller on a slight incline. If a brake feels loose or requires excessive force, the stroller is pulled from inventory.
- Fold Mechanism: The fold latch must lock and unlock smoothly. A stroller that collapses unexpectedly is a serious hazard.
- Harness Check: The 5-point harness must click securely at all five points. Straps must not be frayed, stretched, or difficult to adjust.
- Wheel Integrity: All wheels must spin freely without wobble. Tyres must have adequate tread. Swivel locks on front wheels must work.
- Canopy and Frame: No cracks, bends, or structural damage to the frame. Canopy hinges must hold position.
- Recline Function: All recline positions must lock securely. A recline that slips could startle or endanger a sleeping baby.
Car Seat Safety: Why We Go Beyond Industry Standards
Car seats are the most safety-critical item we rent. A failure here is not an inconvenience; it is life-threatening. That is why our car seat protocol is the strictest of any baby gear rental service in India.
Need gear for your next trip or daily commute?
Book sanitized strollers, car seats and high chairs in minutes. Delivery and pickup included.
- Zero-Accident Policy: If a car seat has been in any vehicle accident, even a minor fender-bender, it is permanently retired. Impact forces can create invisible micro-fractures in the EPS foam that compromise crash protection. We do not take this risk.
- Early Retirement: Manufacturers set expiry dates on car seats (typically 6-10 years from manufacture). We retire our seats 2 years before the manufacturer expiry to maintain a safety margin.
- EPS Foam Inspection: After every return, we inspect the expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam liner for compressions, cracks, or deformation. This foam is what absorbs impact energy in a crash. If it shows any signs of stress, the seat is retired.
- Harness and Buckle Testing: The chest clip and buckle must engage and release with appropriate force. Too loose means the baby can escape. Too tight means emergency removal is difficult.
- ECE Certification Verification: Every seat in our fleet carries ECE R44/04 or R129 (i-Size) certification. We do not rent uncertified seats regardless of brand or price.
Crib Safety: The Standards Your Baby Deserves
Crib safety is governed by very specific engineering requirements. A poorly designed crib is one of the leading causes of infant injury in the home. Here is what we check on every crib before rental.
- Slat Spacing: The gap between vertical slats must be no more than 6 centimeters (approximately 2.4 inches). Wider gaps risk head entrapment.
- Mattress Fit: The mattress must fit snugly with no more than two finger-widths of gap between the mattress edge and the crib frame. Larger gaps are a suffocation risk.
- Hardware Integrity: All screws, bolts, and connectors must be tight and intact. Loose hardware can cause structural collapse.
- Drop-Side Check: We do not rent any drop-side cribs. They were banned in the US in 2011 due to dozens of infant deaths. All our cribs have fixed sides.
- Paint and Finish: Non-toxic, lead-free paint verified. Babies chew on crib rails during teething. Any paint chipping means the crib is refinished or retired.
What About Allergies and Sensitive Skin?
If your baby has eczema, sensitive skin, or known allergies, rented gear might actually worry you more. We understand. Here is how we address this. All our fabric washing uses fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, baby-safe detergent. We do not use fabric softeners, scented sprays, or chemical deodorizers. The UV sanitization step kills allergens like dust mites without leaving any chemical residue.
If your baby has a specific allergy (latex, certain dyes, etc.), tell us when you book. We will check the materials of your rental item and let you know if there is any concern. We would rather lose a rental than put your baby at risk.
How to Inspect Your Rental at Delivery
When our delivery executive arrives, do not rush. Take 5 minutes to properly inspect the item. Here is a quick checklist you can follow.
- Check the seal: Is the tamper-evident sticker intact? If not, ask the executive why.
- Smell test: The item should smell neutral or faintly of clean linen. No musty, chemical, or stale odours.
- Visual scan: Look at the fabric, frame, wheels, and harness. Any stains, cracks, or damage should be flagged immediately.
- Function test: Fold and unfold the stroller. Click and unclick the harness. Test the brakes. Recline and un-recline the seat.
- Record a video: Take a 15-second video showing all sides of the item. This protects you if there is any dispute at return.
- Ask questions: Our executive will demonstrate all features. Do not hesitate to ask about fold mechanisms, weight limits, or cleaning tips.
If anything feels off during inspection, you have the right to reject the item on the spot with zero charge. We will send a replacement or issue a full refund.
The Trust Factor: Why Parents Keep Coming Back
Trust is earned, not claimed. We know that. The first rental is always the hardest because you do not know us yet. But here is what happens after that first delivery: parents see the sealed packaging, smell the freshness, test the gear, and realize it is genuinely clean and safe. Our repeat rental rate is over 70%. That means 7 out of 10 parents who rent from us once come back to rent again. Not because we have the cheapest prices (we do not always), but because they trust the process.
Safety FAQs
- Do you use chemical disinfectants? We use baby-safe, non-toxic disinfectant solutions for hard surfaces. Fabrics are washed with hypoallergenic detergent. UV-C light handles the final sanitization without any chemicals.
- How often is each item rented before it is retired? It depends on the item type. Car seats are retired after 15-20 rentals or at manufacturer expiry (whichever comes first). Strollers typically last 25-30 rentals. Any item that fails a safety check is retired immediately regardless of rental count.
- Can I see your cleaning process? We are working on video documentation of our warehouse process. In the meantime, our delivery executive can walk you through the steps and answer any specific hygiene questions.
- What if my baby gets a rash from the rental? Contact us immediately. We will arrange pickup and a full refund. We will also investigate the specific unit to ensure it was cleaned properly. Your baby's health comes first, always.
- Do you rent items that have been recalled? No. We maintain an active recall database and check every product in our inventory against it. Any recalled item is permanently removed from our fleet.
